Unit 2: Relationships Reflection
These three pieces of artwork are based around the theme, relationships. My first piece of work is associated with printmaking. I chose my two older sisters for this piece because I am very close with them and we’re not just sisters, we’re best friends as well! I chose the red and green paper to frame each picture because both of the photos were taken on Christmas and our whole family loves spending Christmas together every year making it a very happy, special time. Noticing the age difference between the two pictures focuses on how close the three of us have been since we were little girls. According to Bang (2000), “the center of this framed world is the focal point of our attention” (p.62). The second piece of artwork is based on making a collage of surreal journey postcards. I feel these show everyone’s relationship with what they find soothing or comforting based on the background photo they chose for the postcard. These also create relationships with our peers because we put little pieces of what we liked on their postcards to create random, yet unique themes on each of them. The last piece of artwork is revolved around pop-up homes. These show our individual thoughts and feelings with what “home” means to us. I chose the mixture of red and orange colored tissue paper because the coloring around our house is mostly based off of these colors and is very warm and cozy. Bang (2000) mentions, “this “symbolism of color” is part of the way we function everyday” (p.74). I wrote a poem about what home means to me and included peace signs, smiley faces and hearts inside of the piece based on what I wrote about in my poem.
These would all be a great way to utilize visual arts within the classroom but I think printmaking would be the best to do with students because they can be creative while creating a printmaking piece that tells others more about their close relationships. I think these would be great things to put around the classroom because then the students can feel comfortable and can be provided with happy thoughts, especially if they’re ever having a rough day.
